Toby's grin faded away.

In case you've forgotten, Otto Sinclair is still at large. He failed in his last attempt to kill you, but you can be certain that he's going to try again and will keep trying until he either succeeds or is killed. And the young braves of the Nez Perce openly regard you as their enemy. For all I know, so do the Shoshone. So, too, do any number of prison inmates who owe their incarcerations to you. You're the natural target for everyone in Idaho who is disgruntled, for everyone who has a chip on his shoulder. Yet you remain so convinced that you lead a magic life that you actually propose to go into the mountains unattended to meet with the renegade Nez Perce, and you fool yourself into thinking that nothing untoward is going to happen to you. Maybe it isn't; maybe the Holt luck will hold one more time. But if it doesn't, I'm going to be a widow, and your son will grow to manhood never remembering his father!"

She was so incensed, so overwrought, that Toby didn't have the heart to persuade her further. Instead he rose from his place at the table, walked to her chair, and bending down, kissed her tenderly. "All I can do is to ask you to trust me," he said. "Believe me, I'm not going on this trip for pleasure
